Water is an indispensable resource for human survival and nature. At Lidl, we recognise the importance of this resource and take our responsibilities seriously. As part of our ‘conserving resources’ goal, we are committed to ensuring the sustainable management and use of freshwater, both socially and environmentally.
A more sustainable use of water resources is not a future challenge for Lidl but a key issue of the present. Through the implementation of targeted measures, we have set ourselves the goal of safeguarding and using freshwater resources responsibly along the entire supply chain, and to date, we have already taken many steps towards achieving this.
Among these
- We identify the impacts of our product range (consumption and pollution of water) comprehensive and systematic risk analyses.
- We carefully evaluate, with our partners, the use of sustainability standards, such as Rainforest Alliance, and, based on the latter, we implement certification processes to ensure the responsible use of water.
- By the end of the fiscal year 2025, 100% of our fruit and vegetable producers will have to be certified according to a recognised water resources standard.
- We are members of the Environmental Sustainability Solution (ESS) GLOBALG.A.P. working group, where, in collaboration with 80 other stakeholders, we work to develop an integrated sustainability standard for producers.
For each measure implemented, we collaborate with institutions, non-profit organizations, certification bodies, researchers, and local communities to drive concrete change, also engaging in initiatives and projects.
