Lidl Malta is making significant strides in combating food waste through its impactful Feed It Back initiative. This program underscores the company's strong commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
Since its launch in March 2024, the Feed It Back project has achieved remarkable results. By the end of December 2024, seven Lidl Malta stores were actively participating, leading to the donation of over 26 tons of surplus food. This substantial contribution translated to over 86,600 meals provided to individuals and families facing food insecurity.
Building on this success, Lidl Malta expanded the Feed It Back initiative to all ten of its stores across the country at the beginning of 2025. This expansion has enabled even broader collaboration with a network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to assisting those in need. Beyond its foundational partnership with the Malta Food Bank Foundation, Lidl Malta now works closely with Caritas, St Jeanne Antide, Franciscan Welfare Association, Fondazzjoni Sebħ, Id-Dar tal-Providenza, and the Fondazzjoni għall-Opri Soċjali fl-Arċidjoċesi ta Malta (FOSAM). This extensive network ensures that the program reaches and supports as many diverse associations and individuals as possible.
The Feed It Back program involves the careful collection of surplus food items from Lidl Malta stores, including bakery goods, dry products, and fresh fruits and vegetables that aren't included in their 'Food Saving Bags.' These items are then meticulously packaged and picked up by the partner NGOs for distribution to those who need them most.
Owen Micallef, Lidl Malta Director, expressed his pride in the initiative's achievements, stating, "The Feed It Back project is a testament to our commitment to minimizing food waste and ensuring that no one goes hungry. We are incredibly grateful to our NGO partners and all the volunteers involved for their dedication and hard work."
Lidl Malta's Feed It Back initiative stands as a powerful example of how businesses can create a positive impact within their communities. By addressing food waste and supporting vulnerable populations, the company is not only contributing to a more sustainable future but also fostering a profound sense of compassion and solidarity across the island.
