ANIMAL WELFARE

OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE RESPONSIBLE PURCHASE OF ANIMAL PRODUCTS

Numerous own brand products in our assortment contain raw materials of animal origin. Their production is linked to high social expectations regarding animal welfare. Farm animals are sentient beings and we at Lidl are committed to the continuous improvement of their health and well-being. In doing so, Lidl considers aspects relating to health-promoting husbandry conditions, such as access to pasture or outdoor areas, as well as requirements for transport and slaughtering conditions. A high standard of animal welfare not only contributes to the well-being of animals, but also to the quality of our products that come from animal production.

ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS

We are committed to increasing national animal welfare standards, promote husbandry conditions beyond the legal standards, and are committed to concrete improvements with our suppliers. This commitment is also reflected in our collaboration with various NGOs to foster regulatory updates and implement virtuous projects together. In order to enable our customers to make a conscious purchase decision, we consistently indicate the type of husbandry for fresh meat, eggs and drinking milk. This way, we want to make a long-term contribution to raising animal welfare as such and in the entire industry.

Our suppliers are certified according to the International Featured Standard (IFS) or the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

OUR GOALS FOR MORE ANIMAL WELFARE

We want to sustainably improve animal welfare in agricultural livestock farming. To achieve this, we set ourselves ambitious goals.

From 2019

We provide fresh eggs and egg-based products in our private label range, sourced exclusively from ethically raised hens on free-range, outdoor, or organic farms. Additionally, since the same year, all our fresh, unprocessed chicken is supplied by farms committed to high welfare standards, ensuring natural light and enriched environments to promote natural behaviours.

From 2021

All our "Latteria" branded milk products, found in the refrigerated dairy section, come from farms certified for animal welfare. Our suppliers guarantee that these farms meet all relevant national standards.

Within 2030

We are committed to expanding our range of animal products, ensuring that they meet higher welfare standards in all countries where we operate.

OUR MEASURES FOR MORE ANIMAL WELFARE

The welfare of farm animals is an important part of our international CSR strategy. As an intermediary between our suppliers and our consumers, we can contribute to improvements in the food retail sector. On the part of our customers, our measures also aim to create transparency and raise awareness on animal welfare issues. We can contribute to this, especially through the assortment structure to make purchasing animal products more sustainable.

Vegan assortment

Lidl is continuously expanding its vegan assortment to be able to offer a larger selection of animal-free alternatives. Our assortment consists of more than 100 references under the Vemondo brand.

Certifications

We make use of marks and certifications regarding animal products in cooperation with our suppliers and certification authority.

Transparency

We ensure freshness and safety by carefully checking our products throughout the supply chain and by packaging them with care. We guarantee the quality of what our customers buy through transparent labeling.
