Our history: simply successful
Lidl has been present in Malta since 2008. The first store was opened on the 24th April in Santa Venera. By now we are operating 10 stores in the Maltese islands.
Quality and freshness have characterized our well thought-out assortment right from the start. At the same time, we guarantee the best possible price-quality ratio.
Lidl’s success story started in the city of Neckarsulm in the German state Baden-Württemberg. The cornerstone of Lidl’s international expansion was set with a wholesale food company in the 1930s. What has always characterized Lidl’s history is the courage to explore new paths.
Owing to our characteristic business model, our company grew rapidly; and 15 years later 450 stores were active as local suppliers in Germany. By the end of the 1980s, Lidl expanded to other countries. Today we are represented in 31 countries and operate approx. 12,200 stores – and we are still growing: Since 2017 and 2018 Lidl has been also an active player in the US and Serbia.

Lidl & Schwarz KG is founded as a wholesale food company in Neckarsulm, Germany. Until today, our international headquarters is still located in Neckarsulm.

The first Lidl store opens in Ludwigshafen-Mundenheim in Germany.

1988
15 year after its foundation, Lidl already operates more than 450 stores in Germany and counts 5,000 employees.

1989
Lidl becomes an international chain: The first Lidl store is opened in France.

2003
Lidl on the track to success: Across Europe approx. 80,000 people are employed at Lidl.

2006
As the first discounter ever, Lidl permanently adds one of its own fair trade brands “Fairglobe” to its assortment.

This year marks the start of Lidl’s success story in Malta: Lidl opens the 1st store in Santa Venera.

Lidl Malta launches its first social media tool: Facebook.

2016
Lidl Malta opens its largest store yet in Mosta.

2017
Lidl takes the plunge and crosses the ocean to open its first store in the United States.

The company in Malta celebrates its 10th year anniversary on the Maltese islands.

Lidl Malta is the only Maltese company certified Top Employer.

Lidl Malta is the first retailer on the Island to launch Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks

The company inaugurates a new logistics centre in Burmarrad, which will serve as a supply for all Lidl stores in Malta
