Our history: simply successful

From a pioneer in local discount retail to a trusted cornerstone of daily life across the Maltese Islands, Lidl Malta’s journey is built on steady growth, strong local partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to quality and value.

Lidl officially introduced its retail concept to Malta in 2008, opening its very first store on the 24th of April in Santa Venera. What began as a dedicated team of 40 colleagues has since grown into a thriving workforce of over 550 employees across 12 modern stores. Over nearly two decades, our expansion has mirrored our dedication to the island - continually investing in local infrastructure, creating stable employment, and bringing fresh, high-quality products closer to every community in Malta and Gozo.

  • Santa Venera, Luqa, San Gwann & Safi

    Lidl Malta opened its very first stores in Santa Venera, Luqa and San Gwann. Later on during the year the company opened its fourth store in Safi; totalling to four stores in under a year.

  • Zejtun

    During its second year on the Maltese Islands, Lidl Malta opened its fifth store in Zejtun. One of our busiest stores yet!

  • Qormi

    2013 was another important year as Lidl Malta opened its sixth store; the Qormi store.

  • Gozo

    Lidl Malta expanded its reach even further, bringing our quality and value directly to the heart of Gozo

  • Mosta

    In 2016, the number 1 store in all of Europe, our Mosta store, was inaugurated!

  • 10 Year Anniversary

    April 24th 2018 was very significant for Lidl Malta as it marked its 10 year anniversary on the Maltese islands. 

  • Logistics Centre, Burmarrad + Sliema

    In 2022 we opened two new stores, Sliema and Burmarrad. On the 1st of December 2022, we inaugurated a new €3 million logistics centre in Burmarrad. The very efficient and environmentally friendly business premises handles Lidl’s storage and distribution. It covers an expanse of 14,900 square meters and aims to raise Lidl's storage capacities in Malta as well as to upgrade its business operations.

  • 15 Year Anniversary

    In 2023 Lidl Malta celebrated its 15-Year Anniversary with a number of initiatives centered around our colleagues and customers. In 2023 we also relocated to brand new, state-of-the-art offices that symbolise our growth and commitment to providing an exceptional work environment.

     

  • Zebbug

    In 2025, Lidl Malta opened it's eleventh store, located in Zebbug. 

  • Qormi (Ex. Coca Cola)

    In 2026, Lidl Malta opened it's twelfth store, located in Qormi instead of the old Coca-Cola factory.
